Dan demonstrates his dog handling skills with the Runner Ducks (weather permitting) at:
The Weir on Friday afternoons at 3.30pm
My name is Daniel, I am a sheep farmer and am lucky to be tenant farmer just here in the idyllic setting of Whalesborough Farm. As we all know farming is rich with heritage and traditional skills, one of these skills I am most passionate about is the working of the humble sheepdog.
As well a being a farmer I also train and trial sheepdogs on a local, national and international level. Here at the farm I demonstrate these skills to the public. However instead of sheep I use Indian runner ducks for the demonstrations, ducks “flock” together much like sheep and are far more portable not to mention highly entertaining to watch and work with alike.
I run 6 sheepdogs also known as Border collies and happily share my knowledge during my demonstrations down at The Weir. These demonstrations are aimed at all age groups and are true family fun. Children of all ages are invited into the arena to try their hand at rounding up the ducks before one of my dogs enters the arena to demonstrate the ease in which this task can be carried out using the inbuilt instincts of both dog and stock harnessed over centuries by man.
The demonstration is informative as well as fun, we talk about the uses of the sheep dog, how the sheepdog is trained, why the sheepdog wants to work with and for us as well and the primal interaction between dog and stock.
These demonstrations take place twice weekly April through October. School and social groups as well and private bookings can be arranged upon request !
